Latte, Oh Latte, Wherefore art thou…
I am not addicted to my coffee. However, there are some social situations where it just is nice to have a cup of coffee. Or, a peppermint mocha latte if I may be so bold. So far, despite theHammer’s pre-planning of Starbucks locations, I have not had a latte yet on this trip. We do have coffee available, though, and it is not half bad.
The barista must use a delicate hand when preparing each detail of this art form. The water. The beans. The combination of the two. It is not an affair that can be rushed. There must be adequate room made available in the culinary arena for the process to be successful. The technique is mastered by but one in this household. Do not be alarmed at the complexity of the equipment used in this demonstration. Some might say that if Pheidippides (the famed runner from Marathon) had had a cup made from this very place, perhaps he wouldn’t have keeled over at the end of his run (okay, nobody said that, but I had to make this a little bit more ‘Greek’). What kind of purveyor of international cultural practices would I be if I did not offer photographical evidence of the mysteries uncovered here…
The Greek coffee we have bought in a restaurant seems to have a thick layer of sludge at the bottom. I think they missed the step where you put the filter between the beans and the coffee cup.
Other than that, today was pretty quiet. Well, not literally. The wind howls a bit around here, but we stuck close to home. Well, except for the guys who went for a run this afternoon and finally found their way home 3 hours and 17 km later. Is theHammer training for the Athens marathon and didn’t tell me or something?? I will have to investigate that further.
In other news, we got the two-way radios charged up today and the kids had fun playing with those. Dad taught everyone the radio lingo but we have not nailed down our nicknames as of yet. We also bought a puzzle of a map of Greece at the grocery store yesterday and our Puzzler started on it first thing this morning.
Tomorrow we are renting a car and touring the island…
