You know you are on a Greek Island when…

… it takes you a whole week to realize that the time changed! We thought the ferry was seriously late. Strange for the ferry system which is *always* on time. Well, at least it was fall and not spring so we were there early. TheHammer went in the tourism shop to ask when the time change was and it was the previous weekend lol. And here I thought that we were lucky that the stores we happened to go to were open a bit later than usual for their siestas lol.

Well, Santorini was great. It is really an incredible island. I wish we could have stayed a bit longer, but we did everything we wanted to at least once in the time we had. Here is just a bit of what we saw…

This pretty much sums up what the west side of the island looks like.

This is in Oya, on the NE side. It is a popular place to go watch the sunset.

Hmmm. I wonder why.

A pic from Oya, looking at pretty much the rest of the west side of the island. It isn’t a big place. Of course, it used to be a whole lot bigger before that whole center part fell into the ocean long long ago.

We finally found “The Cliffs of Insanity”. Didn’t try climbing up them, though. Maybe next time.

We spent a couple of hours at the black sand beach. It was beautiful fine sand – the nicest beach we have been at, I think. The kids loved it, of course.

We went to the red sand beach first. It wasn’t quite as nice, but definitely uniquely red.

We flew to Athens and are staying in an apartment here. Here are some pics of the place NOT posted on their website lol.

Our kitchen … note the stove on the countertop (that is an oven, not microwave, which is nice since we haven’t had one yet on this trip). And the mini fridge, which keeps us shopping regularly. There doesn’t seem to be bulk buying here at all. At least, not that we have found.

Our second bathroom. The kids like to use it lol. Yes, it really is that small.

dsc_0050

Our fuse box. We need to turn on the water heater half an hour before getting hot water. At least our shower has both hot and cold water taps, unlike when we were in China and turning on the water heater meant scalding showers. We just have to remember to turn it off after half an hour!

We went to the market yesterday. Spices, anyone?

dsc_0050

We happened upon an H&M… cool! I only could fit half of the store in the pic, though. Hey, what is that in the behind the store down that corridor…??

dsc_0050

Oh, ya, it is the outdoor meat market. Well, technically it had a roof, but it didn’t have doors, so does that count as indoor or outdoor? The kids had their first experience of seeing the “whole animal” hanging in the aisles. We also went to the fish market which was much slimier lol.

Today we went to the Byzantium Christian Museum. It was really interesting to see the workmanship at the time of Constantine.

A mosaic of Mary and Jesus.

Here is a little something to test your Greek letter pronunciation. Try to figure out which 3 men are in the marble.

dsc_0050

We also took a hike up Mount Lykavetus. The kids both climbed it all the way! It is really high, as you can see the ‘ground’ in the background lol. J started to complain of her back getting sore when we were almost at the top. I think that has more to do with the jumping up the stairs than anything lol.

dsc_0050

We watched the sunset. J took a turn catching the sun to take a closer look :) .

Can you find the wildlife? I don’t know how long it took him to get up there. Our apartment is also sort of visible in this pic. Well, it isn’t actually, but the hotel that it is behind is there. The Hilton is the big building in the center and we are just down that big street to the right of it, behind the other biggish building. So, a pretty good hike for everyone to get up the hill.

We also went to a 7 story book store which the kids loved, because it had a floor of kids books, both in English and Greek.
